MESSAGE FROM THE

I warmly welcome you to the 1st ALKAN-ZIMMERMAN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION that takes place in Athens/Greece, April 2012.

The competition is dedicated to the memory of distinguished pianists-composers C.V. Alkan and P.J.G. Zimmerman.
Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) was one of the most outstanding piano virtuosos of his age and a genial composer.
Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman (or Zimmermann, 1785-1853) was Alkan’s beloved piano professor at the Conservatoire de Paris. He was considered the best piano professor and one of the most interesting composers of France during his time.
I have always been fascinated by the wonderful mind of Alkan and by the lovely compositions and well written theory treatises of Zimmerman. I believe that the time has come for my passion to be shared with many young pianists and admirers of Alkan and his teacher from around the world.
The ALKAN-ZIMMERMAN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION is organized by the J. CARRERAS FRIENDS OF GREECE-Fighting Against Leukemia. All proceeds from the final concert (April 29, 2011) will be donated to charity organizations.
The ALKAN-ZIMMERMAN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION is being held under the auspices of the GINA BACHAUER INTERNATIONAL MUSIC ASSOCIATION, that was established in 1979 and is dedicated to the memory of the great Greek pianist.

I look forward to receiving your application.
Details concerning the competition can be found on our website.

Wishing you all the best for a marvelous future,

Constantine P. Carambelas-Sgourdas
